First Workshop on the Implementation of the Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO)

Session Objectives

The establishment of the of the Asia-Pacific Road Safety Observatory (APRSO) was announced at the 3rd Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Stockholm Sweden in February, following two preparatory workshops in Singapore (March 2019) and Bangkok (December 2019). APRSO was established by a group of international development organizations – The World Bank, Fédération Internationale de l’ Automobile (FIA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the International Transport Forum (ITF) and The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UK Aid through the Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF). ADB serves as the secretariat for APRSO. This meeting will seek country support / endorsement on the implementation of APRSO. The meeting will focus on:

  1. Discussing the APRSO short and medium term workplan, and new task forces to be created in addition to existing task forces on minimum set of road safety indicators and the task force on governance;
  2. Discussing on-going APRSO studies and initiatives linked to APRSO including on final document on minimum set of road safety indicators, development of a common road safety database and APRSO web portal, and joint/regional surveys and studies;
  3. Sharing and promoting good practice including on national and regional road safety polices and strategies.

Target audience

Participation at the meeting will be by invitation only. Governments in Asia and the Pacific and the wider road safety community in the region.

Road Safety focusing on the mission of APRSO, which is to help countries to improve their understanding of road safety issues, raise awareness, share experiences and best practices, encourage and facilitate actions to reduce fatalities and injuries across countries in the region, generate robust road crash data, undertake analysis and develop policies for road safety in Asia and the Pacific member countries.

Governance structure and function of APRSO, APRSO membership requirements and how to become a member, consensus on / endorsement of workplan by APRSO members, agreement / endorsement of the minimum set of road safety indicators.
