Regional Road Safety Seminar and the APRSO Annual Meeting

APRSO

Globally, road traffic crashes cause nearly 1.3 million preventable deaths and an estimated 50 million injuries each year. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formally endorsed a target of a 50% reduction in road death and injury by 2030 through the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and UNGA Resolution A/RES/74/299.

To guide action, the World Health Organization developed the Global Plan for the Second Decade of Action on Road Safety 2021-2030, which calls on governments and stakeholders to implement an integrated Safe System approach positioning road safety as a key driver of sustainable development. The Plan calls for actions to reach a target of a 50% reduction in the number of road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

Over 2 days, the Road Safety Seminar will address key topics in road safety relevant to Asia and the Pacific, with the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) as major partner and co-host of ADB. APRSO will host its administrative Annual Meeting, comprised of General Assembly (country members) and the Steering Committee meetings. The full 2-day program is designed to give participants a deeper understanding of effective, evidence-based interventions that can be applied towards the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. This is being designed as a flagship event on the road safety calendar reaching out to a diverse body of stakeholders.

The event program will combine the technical presentations of the APRSO Annual Meeting with the presentations of the GRSP Regional Seminar. Topics to be covered include:

  • Findings of the to-be released WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023
  • Global and Regional Plans for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 - 2030
  • New funding models for road safety
