ADB Discusses Improved Trauma Care Systems for Road Safety in Regional Workshop

Road traffic crashes cause approximately 1.3 million deaths globally each year: as a consequence, post-crash care has been included as one of five pillars in the safe system approach to road safety advocate.
A joint sector approach to this arises from the nature of road crashes and their impacts: the ADB Human and Social Development (Health) and Transport teams jointly organized “Improved Trauma Care Systems for Road Safety” workshop on 10-11 October 2023 at ADB HQ in Manila. The training, which formed a module in the APRSO Road Safety Capacity Building Program, was delivered by Dr. Abdul Bachani from the John Hopkins International Injury Research Unit at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. This training was attended in-person by 15 ADB Resident Mission staff and 35 virtual participants from across Asia and the Pacific.
Crashes are a result of failures in the transport system, and the consequences of crashes fall significantly within the health sector due to demands for costly emergency services, treatment, and rehabilitation services. These demands in turn place pressure on the availability of medical specialists and lead to out of pocket expenses for crash victims. This workshop contributes to development of a regional program to improve trauma management services for road crash victims in ADB developing member countries.
A summary introduction to improving trauma care systems for road safety will follow and will be published on the APRSO website.
